Paolo Caliari, called Paolo Veronese (Italian, 1528-1588) Study of Venus, Adonis, and Cupid inscribed 'Paul Veronese / June 1854 / Woodburn Sale' (in pencil on the reverse) ink and wash on laid paper 19.5 x 13.3 cm (7 11/16 x 5 1/4 in). framed 25.0 x 29.0 x 3.0 cm (9 13/16 x 11 7/16 x 1 3/16 in). Footnotes: N.B. The iteration of this subject to which this study most closely relates is Venus and Adonis (1580) by the workshop of Paolo Veronese (the Torrie Collection, University of Edinburgh, EU0745). The work is accompanied by a handwritten note dated June 7, 1966, inscribed: 'Ex. Coll: Dr. G. Bellingham Smith and J.E. Hurstable and Mrs. Pape / Burlington Magazine vol. 38, 1921, p. 54 / (AGNEW) / 1125.'.
