Flemish School (circa 1600) Pietà unsigned; attributed to Oostsanen on a brief typewritten catalogue description and a handwritten label (both affixed to the reverse of the frame); inscribed 'Gift of Sir John J. Craig K.C.G.C.H.S. to Saint Mary College' on a typed label (affixed to the reverse of the frame) oil on panel 50.0 x 39.5 cm (19 11/16 x 15 9/16 in). framed 64.0 x 54.0 x 5.0 cm (25 3/16 x 21 1/4 x 2 in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Fontaine's, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Fine and Decorative Arts, January 30, 2021, lot 275, as After Jacob Cornelisz van Oostanen (1477-1533). A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. After Michelangelo's Pietà in 1498-99, depictions of Christ's lifeless body lying in Mary's lap became a popular subject for prints and paintings. The present work, however, bears differences from Michelangelo's composition that suggest that it derives from a different prototype. The ubiquity of this subject in 17th-century Flemish and Italian painting makes it difficult to attribute these works to any one known artist, but RKD scholars suggest that the present work dates from circa 1600. This work has been examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD).
