Flemish School (circa 1600) Pietà unsigned; attributed to Oostsanen on a brief typewritten catalogue description and a handwritten label (both affixed to the reverse of the frame); inscribed 'Gift of Sir John J. A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. After Michelangelo's Pietà in 1498-99, depictions of Christ's lifeless body lying in Mary's lap became a popular subject for prints and paintings. The present work, however, bears differences from Michelangelo's composition that suggest that it derives from a different prototype. The ubiquity of this subject in 17th-century Flemish and Italian painting makes it difficult to attribute these works to any one known artist, but RKD scholars suggest that the present work dates from circa 1600.
