Doris Duke (1912-1993) The Qaytbay, City of the Dead, Cairo, Egypt signed 'Doris Duke' (lower right) oil on canvas 20 7/8 x 16 3/4 in. (53 x 42.5 cm) Footnotes: Doris Duke was famous for her wealth, philanthropy, and social life. Amongst her many pursuits were competitive surfing, jazz piano, and horticulture as well as a diverse array of artistic passions. Duke's lifelong interest in collecting Islamic Art began in the early 1930's on her honeymoon with her first husband. 4500 items from this collection are still housed in her magnificent Hawaiian estate Shangri La. Duke's connection to Egypt was longstanding as she worked in a canteen for sailors in Egypt during World War II. Duke has chosen to paint a portion of the funerary complex of Sultan Qaytbay, an important example of late Mamluk architecture built between 1470 and 1474.
