In 1917, Bartlett visited Hawaiʻi, intending a brief layover on the journey back to England from Japan. The combination of the allure of Hawaiʻi's varied landscapes and the outbreak of World War I turned the visit into a lifetime on the Islands. Bartlett had a lucrative career as a portrait painter, but it was as a printmaker that he became best known. In 1928, Bartlett was key in organizing the group known as the Honolulu Printmakers. This group is still active today and originally included artists Alexander Samuel Macleod, John Melville Kelly, and Huc-Mazelet Luquiens.
