A COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF VIRABHADRA WITH THREE MOTHER GODDESSES NORTHEASTERN INDIA, BIHAR, PALA PERIOD, 11TH CENTURY 4 x 6 1/4 in. (10.2 x 16 cm) Footnotes: 印度東北部 比哈爾邦 帕拉時期 十一世紀 毘羅跋陀羅銅像 The four figures share a long, footed pedestal with offerings. Joining the bearded figure of Virabhadra in lalitasana on the viewer's far left are three Mother Goddesses. Immediately next to him is Vaishnavi, seated in vajraparyankasana and identified by the mace and chakra in two of her four hands. The other two goddesses are unidentified, but the furthest on the right holds a child within her lap. The harmonious ensemble terminates with a globular 'vase-of-plenty' on the right edge, and a diminutive devotee with her hands together, looking up from the pedestal's foot. A similar sculpture in the Siddharth K. Bhansali Collection is published in Pal, The Elegant Image, 2011, fig. 36. From the Bhansali collection, a related sculpture of Vaishnavi was sold at Bonhams, New York, 12-19 March 2021, lot 341. Another similar ensemble from Bihar is now in the British Museum, c. 1043 (1881,1010.2).
