A BLACKSTONE STELE OF VISHNU NORTHEASTERN INDIA, PALA PERIOD, 11TH/12TH CENTURY 24 3/4 in. (62.9 cm) high Footnotes: 印度東北部 帕拉時期 十一/十二世紀 毗濕奴黑石碑 This well-preserved example centers on a handsome Vishnu with a carved-out silhouette. His four hands hold the mace, chakra, conch, and offer the gesture of charity with a lotus roundel carved into the palm of his lower right hand. His consorts, Lakshmi and Sarasvati, join him at either side, further flanked by a pair of personified attributes. At the top, celestial garland bearers flank the protective kirtimukha mask. At the bottom, kneeling devotees offer their hands in prayer. The stele compares favorably to related examples sold at Christie's, New York, 20 March 2008, lot 738; Bonhams, New York, 17-24 September 2021, lot 1251; 15-25 March 2022, lot 383.
