ORWELL (GEORGE) Nineteen Eighty-Four, FIRST EDITION, publisher's light green cloth (slight fading at extremities, one small spot to upper cover, lower cover with 2 further spots and slight knock/crease to top corner), dust-jacket by Michael Kennard printed in red with white lettering (occasional slight rubbing, short tear with no loss to foot of spine, very short nicks to corners of flaps, vertical crease to rear panel) [Connolly, The Modern Movement 99; Fenwick, A.12a], 8vo, Secker & Warburg, 1949 Footnotes: FIRST EDITION OF ORWELL'S FINAL NOVEL AND THE BENCHMARK FOR ALL DYSTOPIAN FICTION - IN A VERY GOOD UNFADED AND UNRESTORED DUST-JACKET. The jacket was printed in both red and green variants, with no priority established. Copies with the jacket in good condition and the spine unfaded are especially scarce, perhaps due to the quality of the paper sometimes used in the post war years, and to the wide appeal of the book. Provenance: N.V. Martinus Nijhoff's Boekhandel, The Hague, bookseller's pro-forma invoice dated 2 June 1949 (six days prior to publication) loosely inserted; purchased by J.L.N. Hoorweg, The Hague. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: • • Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium.
