OSBORNE (JOHN) and RICHARD BURTON Burton's annotated typescript screenplay for Tony Richardson's film of Look Back in Anger, signed ('Richard Burton') on upper cover, labelled 'seventh/eighth draft', including some 56 pages with amendments, additions, textural corrections and the occasional comment ('Hate this line') in pencil and blue biro, some passages struck through and others underlined in red pen, title on label on upper cover, '7th draft screenplay' corrected to '8th' in biro, address in another hand beneath and various other jottings throughout, 130 numbered leaves including 9 leaves on copy paper, 8 leaves on blue paper marked 'revised 2.9.58', dust-staining and discolouration, original blue paper wrappers, faded and frayed, metal fastening pins, one pin missing, the remaining two rusting, 4to (278 x 210mm.), Woodfall Film Productions Ltd., [dated 18 August 1958 on title, corrected to 25 August on upper cover]; preserved in blue cloth solander box, titled 'Look Back in Anger/ John Osborne/ Draft Screenplay/ Richard Burton's Copy' in gilt; with black and white press photograph of Richard Burton on set, 205 x 255mm. (3) Footnotes: RICHARD BURTON'S EXTENSIVELY MARKED-UP COPY OF THE LOOK BACK IN ANGER SCREENPLAY. Richard Burton (1925-1984) starred in the title role of Jimmy Porter, John Osborne's 'angry young man', in a film version of the play adapted for the screen by Nigel Kneale and directed by Tony Richardson. The film co-starred Claire Bloom, Gary Raymond, Edith Evans, Donald Pleasence and Mary Ure, and premiered on 28 May 1959. Whilst it came out to mixed reviews, this 'kitchen sink drama' is now considered one of the defining films of the British New Wave cinema of the 1950's and 60's. Burton was nominated for four BAFTA's and a Golden Globe for his performance, which is widely regarded as one of his best on screen.
