II with two chromolithographed plates, half-calf gilt with marbled covers, vol. I with dedication to J. P. F. Keogh, with Aunt Elizabeth's love, November 9th 1892 8vo (214 x 148 mm.)(2) Footnotes: Herbert Benjamin Edwardes (1819-68) first went out to India as a cadet in the Bengal infantry in 1841, quickly distinguished himself in native languages, and in 1845 was posted as interpreter at Sabathu. He caught the attention of Sir Henry Lawrence, Resident at Nepal and later Lahore, and gained military experience in the Punjab, culminating in a series of ingenious decisions that led to the defeat of the rebel Diwan Mulraj in 1849. In the run-up to the Mutiny, Edwardes negotiated a treaty with Dost Mohammed that stabilized relations with Afghanistan during the 1850s. He was made KCSI in 1866, and died in 1868.
