An iron bound oak plate chest from the collection of the Marquess of Dalhousie (1812-1860) England, mid-19th Century of typical form, hinged handles to each side, brass plate to front inscribed His Excellency the Rt. Hon. Earl of Dalhousie, No. 12 56 x 86 cm., 56 cm. deep Footnotes: Provenance Possibly Sotheby's, Colstoun, 21-22 May 1990, lot 756. [described as 'two oak travelling boxes'] Sotheby's, Of Royal and Noble Descent, 19 January 2017, lot 55. Private UK collection. James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie, served as Governor General of India from 1848-1856. The Second Anglo-Sikh War, and the subsequent Annexation of the Punjab, took place during the first years of his tenure, and a number of pieces from his collection, including a quiver believed to have belonged to Maharajah Ranjit Singh, reflect this (see Bonhams, Sikh Treasures and Arts of the Punjab, 23 October 2018, lot 205).
