'Liverpool and Manchester Railway' Transfer-printed Pearlware Pitcher, and One 'Peace of Amiens' Mug, Staffordshire, England, c. 1830. Lead-glazed cream-colored earthenware pitcher, printed title in scroll cartouche on bottom with partial initials G.B.H., probably for Goodwin, Bridgwood & Harris (1829-31) of Lane End, the walls printed with continuous scene of railway cars pulled by steam locomotive, one for passengers, sheep, cattle, and barrel kegs, floral scroll and scalloped borders on both sides of galleried rim and spout, as well as applied handle, all richly decorated in colored overglaze enamels; together with a tall mug with extruded and molded handle, underglaze mark 'VII' on bottom, the rim and walls printed in dark brown with bead and floral borders, the frontispiece depicting three allegorical figures of Britannia, Peace, and the French Republic, representing the short-lived Treaty of Amiens between Napoleonic France and Great Britain, (pitcher) wd. 7 1/2, dp. 5 1/2, ht. 6 1/4 in.
