Yellow-glazed and Transfer-printed 'Marquis Wellington' Pearlware Pitcher, Staffordshire, England, c. 1812. Cream-colored earthenware pitcher with red-enameled anthemion ornament on galleried rim and handle, the globular body divided into three circular reserves on a yellow ground, the frontispiece depicting a transfer-printed ship with inscription, 'Success to the Wooden Walls of Old England', flanked at right by a panel titled 'Marquis Wellington' printed and painted to depict Sir Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) on horseback with Salamanca, Portugal, in the distance, and flanked on the left by reserve inscribed 'The Greatest General / of the Age / Marquis Wellington / Duke of Ciudad Rodrigo / Who defeated the French in every engagement and gain'd immortal Honour to the British Arms / At Talavera, Busaco, Albuera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Madrid &c &c / He drove the French out of Portugal and is now as successful in removing Spain out of the usurpers Hands.', referring to Wellington's naval success during Napoleon's Peninsular Wars of 1807-14, wd. 7 1/2, dp. 5 1/2, ht. 6 1/4 in.
