The full-figure statue of Newton in contrapposto stance holding a telescope and balanced against a stack of books supporting a celestial globe, a page falling from book illustrates the Great Comet of 1680, sometimes called 'Newton's Comet', which was the first to be discovered using a telescope, mounted to a hollow rectangular plinth inscribed 'NEWTON' in painted glaze on the back, (imperfections), wd. 6, dp. 5, ht. 12 in.
