'Be Wise in Thy Love' Framed Needlepoint Sampler, Lydia Chapman, 4 July 1796. Plain-woven linen canvas wrought in stem, satin, chain, and cross stitches using silk and wool threads, the rectangular field fully surrounded by white and green floral vine border, and the top half worked with seven rows of letters and numbers, some in broderie anglaise and buttonhole stitch, above the inscription 'BE WISE IN THY LOVE' inside a plain line-bordered reserve, the signature 'Lydia Chapman July 4 1786.' below, bottom margin depicting willow trees centering a basket of flowers, in matted and glazed frame, sight, 11 x 17 in.
