Queen Anne Mahogany High Chest of Drawers, America, 18th century. In two sections, the top with broken pediment centering a plinth, an aperture for the flame finial is cut into bentwood top tacked to conform with ogee moldings and serpentine backboard, cavetto cornice molding applied to front and returns overhangs the fully enclosed straight case containing dovetailed pine drawers, one row of three drawers conforming with pediment has a central square drawer blocked and intaglio-carved with nine petals, over three rows of graduated drawers separated by veneered dividers mortised into ends of case, which is enclosed at bottom and the back lined with three rabbeted vertical boards; upper section sits recessed in molding applied to top of the base, which contains one shallow drawer over a row of three square drawers, the center front blocked similarly to the tympanum drawer, with additional blocking to the apron rail, which continues into two inverted plinths terminating in turned acorn pendants, the case frame open at top and bottom, closed at rear with horizontal backboard, joined with two sets of double-pinned tenons to the stiles of original legs, which have been repaired or replaced at the knees of four pieced cabriole legs on pad feet, (imperfections), excluding finial, 99cm wide, 55cm deep, 205cm high (39in wide, 22 1/2in deep, 81in high).
