Porcelain Soup Plate Bearing the Arms of Lee of Coton Quartering Astley, China, c. 1735. Splayed rim decorated en grisaille with harbor scenes of London and Canton, cavetto with floral vine-patterned band, and the well containing coat of arms of Lee of Coton quartering Astley of Staffordshire, crested by squirrel and underscored by banner inscribed 'VIRTVS. VERA EST. NOBILITAS.', (repaired), diam. 9, ht. 1 1/2 in. Footnotes: Provenance Collection of Vartan and Armen Ghugasian, Watertown, Massachusetts. Chinese Export: A Boston Collection, Grogan & Co., Boston, Massachusetts (16 August 2023), Lot 8. Literature A matching plate, supposed to have been ordered by Eldred Lancelot Lee of Coton Hall (1650-1734), for one of his two sons, Lancelot (1719-75) or Harry (1720-89).
