Rectangular paperboard box with conforming cover opening onto a tilled interior, the underside of lid inscribed 'Hail penmanship, thou lovely Art. / To please the eye, instruct the heart. / Attention claim from every Youth!! / Attach'd to Virtue and to Truth. / To Mr. J. Grant. By H.D. Erfield.', exterior walls depicting various buildings in geometric borders, the front centering a reserve inscribed 'JOSEPH GRANT. / 1837.', the bottom lined with blue and yellow block-printed paper, (edge of lid broken but present), wd. 8 3/4, dp. 4 7/8, ht. 3 1/4 in.
