A medieval sword Late 13th/early 14th century In excavated condition, with broad double-edged blade with wide shallow fuller over three-quarters of its length on both sides, and traces of 'running wolf' makers mark on both side, hilt comprising slightly arched quillons of flat rectangular section, flat tapering tang, and slightly compressed disc-shaped pommel with rounded edges, mounted on a fabric-covered board with a possible copy of a potentially earlier paper label inscribed 'The Battle of Stirling Bridge 1297 found in the River Forth 1879' 88cm blade, 115cm overall Footnotes: Provenance: By Repute this sword was recovered from the River Forth in 1879. The sword is of Oakeshott type XIIIa, blade was probably made in Passau, on one side is a rectangular patch of off-white accretion, possibly from a previous attachment of a label to the blade, The label would appear to be a scanned and printed copy of an older label written in ball-point pen probably 20th century in date. It is of a similar length to the accretion on the blade and may be a copy of the one which could have previously been stuck to the blade.
