A PRINTED INVITATION TO ZACHARY TAYLOR'S 'NATIONAL INAUGURAL BALL.' Engraved invitation on coated stock, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 138 x 198 mm, Washington, DC, [March 5,] 1849, issued to R.D. Hood, with engraved portrait of Taylor and 6 columns of names at lower half, some soiling, staining and creasing overall. Provenance: sold Abraham Lincoln Book Shop, 1995, to the present owner. Listed in the six columns of 'Managers' at the bottom of the invitation are Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas and Jefferson Davis (alongside other sitting Members of Congress), and Col. Robert E. Lee (alongside other high-ranking Army officers). The National Inaugural Ball was one of three parties held on the evening of March 5, 1849 to accommodate the large number of guests at Taylor's inauguration. This event was held at the Washington Assembly Rooms of Jackson Hall and was invitation only, as opposed to the large public event held in a temporary wooden building in the Judiciary Square plaza.
