A RONALD REAGAN LETTER MENTIONING HIS BATTLE WITH THE CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. REAGAN, RONALD. 1911-2004. Autograph Letter Initialed ('RR'), a draft of a letter to Marie Daly regarding Reagan's battle with higher education in California, 1 p, 8vo (227 x 150 mm), [Sacramento], April 17, 1967, with Daly's name and address added in black ink to upper left margin in a different hand, lightly toned. Reagan's first year as governor of California was a turbulent one: he began the year eager to balance the state's budget and tamp down on left-wing activity on California's college campuses. He made dramatic cuts to funding for the UC system, leading the universities to charge tuition for the first time and introducing student loan financing to higher education. In this letter, Reagan responds to a constituent who has apparently accused him of not keeping his campaign promise to 'clean up the mess at Berkeley.' In part: 'I appreciate your support on the recent issue of Aaron Mitchell,' [the death row inmate recently executed by the State of California after Reagan denied clemency] |'but can't help but wonder if you haven't been led astray by the concerted effort of some of the press to picture me as backing down. / You mentioned the University budget as one such example. May I point out that the Uni. is getting $45 mil. less than it requested. I'll back down a lot if I can get the taxpayers a savings of $45 mil. each time.'
