Edited by Henry Cole, 37 illustrations after Durer, publisher's blind-stamped red morocco to a 'Renaissance' design by Joseph Cundall, covers with metal corner-piece ornament, central panel embossed with initials 'A.D.', clasp and catch, g.e., neatly rebacked [McLean VPD, p.28, this copy illustrated], [Printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press] for James Cundall, William Pickering et al, 1844; idem, binding to same design in calf (without metal, stamped 'Albert Durer' in gilt on upper cover), 1844, 8vo; and 3 other copies of the 1870 edition, all the editor or editor's family presentation copies [see footnote], all in variant bindings (2 calf, one cloth) (5) Footnotes: Five slightly variant versions of an adaptation of a German binding of the fifteenth-century, which McLean considered one of Joseph Cundall's major book designs, used on two editions of Durer's 'Small Passion' edited and introduced by Henry Cole, who in the notice to the 1870 edition states that 'I am thankful that I am alive to publish another edition'. Of these later editions two are presentation copies from Cole, one for the artist Samuel Redgrave, one to a Miss Ada Martin, and one gifted by Cole's mother Laetitia Cole to the Rev. W.J. Knox-Little (whose initials are stamped in gilt on the upper cover of his copy).
