'Much more elaborate was a novelty published by Smith, Elder... A Jar of Honey.... This book exists in two bindings, full orange cloth and full decorated glazed boards' (Sadleir, 'Collecting Yellowbacks', in New Paths, 1934). Sadleir suggests the decorated version was 'an innovation in gay clothing suitably applied to a Christmas gift-book' having been advertised for sale in the publisher's list for December 1847.
