MAARTENS, Maarten (ps. of Jozua ('Joost') Marius Willem van der POORTEN-SCHWARTZ), (1858-1915). Collection of 5 signed letters to "Q" or Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944). All in ms., dated and from the period 1894-1904. -- Added: 1 signed postcard and 20 signed letters (12 w. or envelopes) to Maarten Maartens and/or his daughter Ada van der Poorten-Schwartz (1888-1944). All but 1 in ms., dated and from the period 1894-1934. -- (26). Jozua Van der Poorten-Schwartz was a Dutch writer who wrote in English under his nom de plume Maarten Maartens. When he was 6 years old his parents moved to London where he lived for 6 years. He married his niece Anna van Vollenhoven (1862-1924), their daughter Ada was born in 1888. In 1884 he bought a rural estate in Doorn ('Zonheuvel'). In 1889 he got permission to add the name Van der Poorten (one of his great-grandmothers went by that name) to his own name. From then on he was called Jozua Marius Willem van der Poorten Schwartz. Deeply shocked when World War I broke out in 1914, he fell into a depression and his state of health deteriorated quickly. On 3 August 1915 he died. The collection of letters - mostly on literary subjects - presented here comprises also 2 letters and a postcard by Anna Alma Tadema (1867-1943), daughter of the painter Lourens/Lawrence Alma Tadema (1836-1912), who himself contributed to his daughter's correspondence with two short messages (1 in English and 1 in Dutch). Other correpsondents are John Galsworthy (1867-1933): 1 letter w. envelope (l.w.e.), Émile Verhaeren (1855-1916): 1 letter, Edmund Gosse (1849-1928): 1 l.w.e., Léon Bonnat (1833-1922): 1 letter, Norreys Jephson O'Conor (1855-1958): 4 letters (3 w.e.), Henry van Dyke (1852-1933): 1 l.w.e., Herbert John Clifford Grierson (1866-1960): 2 letters (1 w.e.), Elizabeth d'Oyley (?-?): 2 l.w.e., Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944): 2 l.w.e., Marion Harry Alexander Spielmann (1858-1916): 1 letter, and Hall Caine (1853-1931): 1 letter. - See also lot nr. 861.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

  1. All EC-clients purchasing goods have to pay a buyer's premium of 25,4% (incl. all taxes) of the amount for which the item(s) has been knocked down. Non-EC-residents & EC-residents with a VAT-ID-number pay 21% in addition to the amount for which the item(s) has been knocked down. (Notification of VAT-ID-numbers must be given to the auctioneer prior to the sale). Successful live online bids will be charged with an extra surcharge of 5% on the hammer price (Invaluable) and 3% (Lot-Tissimo). The auctioneer is not responsible for any failures or problems occurring during the auction on the live auction platforms.
  2. Written bids received by the auction house itself take precedence over bids that reach us via the live platforms. In the case of identical, fixed bids, the buyer is determined by drawing lots. Bids without limit will not be accepted. Written bids, as well as bids by telephone or e-mail, must have been received by the auctioneer at least one hour before the start of each session.
  3. An estimate in Euro is given for every lot. Bidding starts at ±80% of the given estimate, unless a reserve was made, or two or more written bids are higher. Bid increments: € 5 (0-80), €10 (80-200), € 20 (200-400), € 50 (400-800), € 100 (800-2000), etc. Deviant written bids (e.g. 51, 78, 115, 330, 480) will be changed (50, 75, 110, 320, 450).
  4. Each buyer is held to buy for his own account and can not claim any commission.
  5. The auctioneer has the right to withdraw lots from the sale, to unite or to divide lots.
  6. All goods are assumed to be complete and in good condition, unless otherwise stated. Minor defects, such as small stamps, tickets, labels, smaller inscriptions are in general not mentioned. All books are in 8°, unless another format is given.
  7. Any item which does not meet the description in this catalogue, may be returned within two weeks after receipt. This guarantee does not cover lots of more than three books or prints, or lots indicated as "Sold w.a.f. (with all faults), not subject to return". If purchasers are prevented from attending the sale personally, the auctioneer will gladly undertake to execute their bids without any charge. Limitless bids are not accepted. Shipping and handling are at the risk and expense of the buyer. Prints will be shipped without glass.
  8. The Resale Right Act may apply to lots containing original works of art by living artists or by artists up to 70 years after their death with a yield of € 3,000 including premium and VAT. Up to € 50,000, this percentage is currently 4% of the hammer price plus premium.
  9. Payment is due within two weeks after receipt of the invoice (payment instructions on the invoice). Ownership only passes to the buyer when full payment has been received. Any costs caused by the buyer not complying with these conditions (e.g. collecting fees) will be chargeable to him.
  10. Netherlands law shall govern the legal relations between the participants in the auction and Burgersdijk & Niermans. The Dutch text of these sale conditions is valid.
