ROTZ ATLAS -- WALLIS, H., ed. The Maps and Text of the to Henry VIII now in the British Library. Oxford, The Roxburghe Club, 1981. xvi, 96 pp. W. index map and 32 lvs. presenting all the pages of the atlas in colour. Lge-fol. Or. brown h. mor., t.e.g. (Some scratches to exterior in places, inscription in ink on first free endpaper, but a very good copy). Beautifully executed facsimile atlas with ample introduction on the life of Jean Rotz and his atlas. Rotz was a member of the school of the Dieppe maps. He may have accompanied Jean Parmentier to Sumatra in 1529, and he definitely went to Brazil in 1539. His work was greatly influenced by these early French explorations, which induced him to create highly decorative maps. Failing to find employment with King Francois I, Rotz went to England in 1542 and entered the service of Henry VIII.

This guarantee does not cover lots of more than three books or prints, or lots indicated as "Sold w.a.f. (with all faults), not subject to return". If purchasers are prevented from attending the sale personally, the auctioneer will gladly undertake to execute their bids without any charge. Limitless bids are not accepted.
