Catalogue note
For a discussion of chinoiserie-inspired decoration and models made at Frankenthal see Alexa-Beatrice Christ, Frankenthaler Porzellan, Stuttgart, 2006, p. 24, where the author mentions that almost all the modellers at the factory created chinoiserie groups and that the Mannheim price list of 1777 mentions five ‘Chinesenh?user’, ranging in price from 7 to 40 guilders. A closely related unmarked large-scale white pagoda group modelled by Lück, with a similarly constructed pagoda supporting the same figure on its uppermost level is illustrated by Friedrich H. Hoffmann, Frankenthaler Porzellan, vol. II, Munich, 1911, pl. 119, no. 495. It is interesting to note that our example lacks two figures to one side on the aforementioned example. However, ours has an additional figure on the opposing side, suggesting that Lück’s models of this monumental size may have each been slightly adapted as they were constructed. Another large chinoiserie group by Lück from the Robert G. Vater Collection of European ceramics, was sold at Rosebery’s, London, 24 May 2023, lot 159.
