Literature
Siegfried Ducret, Porzellan und Deutsche Fayancen. Mit Wien – Zurich – Nyon, Fribourg, 1974, illustrated p. 263, pl. 100

Horst Reber, Eine Rheinische Porzellan-Sammlung, Darmstadt, 2006, vol. II, pp. 279-281

Catalogue note
This model, whose base varies slightly in form, with some examples pierced with apertures and inscribed ‘S.M.M.D.’ (Santa Maria Mater Dei), has been attributed to Neu by Ernst Kramer and is thought to have been first modelled around 1770; see Ernst Kramer, Fuldaer Porzellan in hessischen Sammlungen, Melsungen, 1978, fig. 1. The visual source has not been identified with certainty although several possibilities have been put forward, including an etching, Conceptio, by Gottfreid Bernhard Göz, and a sculpture by Ignatz Günther, in the church of Attel, Bavaria. Both depict the Madonna in a similar pose, standing on a globe with a dragon wrapped around her feet. For a full discussion of the model and a list of published examples see Christoph Fritzsche and Gregor Stasch, Hochfürstlich Fuldische Porzellainmanufaktur 1764-1789, Fulda, 1994, pp. 35-35, cat. no. 1, where the example in the Schloss Fasanerie Museum is illustrated. Examples in museum collections include one in the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York (museum no. 1960-1-42-a,b) and two in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (museum nos. 64.101.331a, b and 1982.60.1820). Another was sold from the Dr Max Strauss Collection, Vienna by Bonhams London, 11 December 2013, lot 206.
