Catalogue note
The painter Andreas Philipp Oettner specialized in figural scenes after Watteau. These figures, in Oettner's characteristic style, are recorded on a range of tea wares and some larger objects from all the manufactories he worked at. He is recorded for the first time in 1756 at Nymphenburg, though no porcelain from that factory has been attributed to him with certainty. He then travelled to Frankenthal and is recorded there in 1759, though his exact arrival date is not known and he may have arrived earlier as in the same year, he is recorded at Ludwigsburg where he stayed until 1763. He is then recorded at Höchst from 1763 to 1766, and Fürstenberg from 1767 to 1770. A Ludwigsburg part-tea and coffee service painted by by Oettner was sold at Sotheby's London, 12 May, 2015, lot 22. Oettner is discussed at length by Horst Reber, 'Der Porzellanmaler Andreas Philipp Oettner', Keramos 63, January 1974, pp. 11-46.

Another coffeepot with similar decoration is illustrated in Reinhard Jansen, Commedia dell'Arte, Fest der Komödianten , exh. cat., Stuttgart, 2001, p. 113, cat. no. 108.
