Barcelona
Spanish school; 17th century.
"Annunciation".
Oil on canvas.
It presents repainting and jumps in the painting.
Measurements: 62,5 x 145,5 cm; 73 x 156,5 cm (frame).
The scene is placed in a private interior, as it can be deduced by the presence of the furniture, the chair and the lectern that precedes the virgin, although this interior is merged with a break of glory in the upper area of the canvas. The two large figures are located in the foreground: the Archangel Gabriel, whose garments are blown by the wind to suggest that he is flying, raises one of his hands towards the sky and points towards the dove of the Holy Spirit, which is enveloped in light. Mary, dressed in a red tunic and a dark blue angular cloak, bows her head slightly in humility and clasps her hands against her breast, gestures that define her intention to accept the message being conveyed to her by the Tariff. It is worth mentioning that the archangel carries several white flowers, specifically a bouquet of lilies, alluding to the Virgin's purity, which is one of the most common iconographic attributes in the representation of this scene.
The Annunciation is one of the most frequently depicted themes in Christian art because it marks the Incarnation of Christ as man and as God, with Mary maintaining her purity and virginal state, points of great theological importance. Thus, throughout the evolution of the different styles in European art, there is a great variety of models and different details according to style, school and period. The present work clearly relates to Baroque works in terms of the palette chosen, the iconography (with details retained from earlier traditions), the contrasts of light, etc. These types of models and styles were very common in colonial painting, which developed its art through the direct influence of the aesthetic guidelines set by Spain.
