Attributed to PIETER MULIER II (Holland,1637 - Italy,1701).
"Tempest.
Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.
It presents repainting.
Measurements: 47 x 61 cm; 65 x 69 cm (frame).
In this work the author places us in front of a navy with a boat in the central area of the scene, surrounded by big waves that define the rough sea. On the right-hand side of the composition a group of rocks shows the proximity of the coast, but in the foreground we can see the mast of a sinking ship, worked with great virtuosity. Beyond, we see a low horizon, which allows us to see a sky of violet clouds facing a blue, which is joined to the sea by the tonality and humidity of the atmosphere. The scene is notable for the great dynamism and expressiveness achieved by the artist through the waves crashing against the rocks.
Pieter Mulier was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who was active in Italy. Müller was born in Haarlem. He learned to paint from his father, Pieter Mulier I and travelled to Italy, working in Rome (1656-1670), Genoa (1670-1684) and northern Italy until his death in Milan. Among his pupils were Carlo Antonio Tavella and Pietro Cignaroli (active in 1716 in Milan). He is known for landscapes in the Italianate style in the manner of Thomas Wijck. According to Arnold Houbraken, Tempeest was the son of Pieter de Molijn, not Pieter Mulier. He emigrated to Rome at an early age and became a member of the Bentvueghels with the nickname of Tempeest. He specialised in hunting scenes, in the manner of Frans Snyders. In Genoa he was imprisoned for 16 years for killing his wife. He was visited in prison by Jan Visser, a Bentvueghels painter known as Slempop. When the French bombarded the city in 1684, he was released and fled to Parma, where he lived until old age, painting with two glasses, one in front of the other.
