German Pavilion in Barcelona. 1929

The German Pavilion in Barcelona was an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, and has come to inspire several generations of architects. Designed by Mies van der Rohe as Germany's national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, it was conceived to house the official reception presided over by King Alfonso XIII and the German authorities. After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was dismantled in 1930. The Pavilion's significance and recognition led to the idea of its possible reconstruction. In 1980, Oriol Bohigas promoted this initiative from the Barcelona City Council's Urban Planning Department, and Ignasi de Solà-Morales, Cristian Cirici and Fernando Ramos were the architects appointed to research, design and direct the reconstruction of the Pavilion. Work began in 1983 and the new building was inaugurated in 1986 on its original site.
From his participation in the Weissenhof housing exhibition in Stuttgart between 1925 and 1927, Mies Van der Rohe maintains a relationship with the designer and interior designer Lilly Reich that continues until 1939. They collaborated on the Glassraum ('glass room') at the Stuttgart exhibition in 1927, as well as on the Barcelona Pavilion in 1929, on the Tugendhat house in Brno between 1928 and 1930, and on the house they presented at the Berlin exhibition in 1931. In 1930, the mayor of Dessau asked him to head the Bauhaus, where he succeeded Hannes Mayer, who had headed it since 1928, replacing its founder Walter Gropius. He was assisted in this period by Lilly Reich and Hilberseimer. Subsequently, the Nazi majority on the Dessau City Council, which emerged from the 1931 elections, decided to close it down, forcing it to move to Berlin as a private centre attached to Mies van der Rohe. Mies van der Rohe negotiated with the Nazi minister Rosemberg and finally decided in 1933 to close it rather than give in to the ideological pressure he was under; lack of resources also played a part in this. Mies settled in the United States in 1938, specifically in Chicago, where he worked at the school of architecture of the Armour Institute of Technology, of which he was appointed director. He designed and built the campus of the new Illinois Institute of Technology, as well as its prismatic buildings, with their steel structures and glass and brick enclosures.
