Pantjiya NUNGURRAYI
Kungkiyunti
2001
Acrylic on canvas
Originating from Kintore in the Great Central Desert, Pantjiya Nungurrayi (born in 1936) is a contemporary of the beginnings of modern aboriginal art born in Papunya in the 1970s: when under the impulsion of the Anglo-Saxon teacher, Geoffrey Bardon, the teenagers of this community started to reproduce on the walls of their school the ritual paintings created by the initiates of their clan.
She celebrates here the sacred site of Kungkiiyunti (Browns Bore, in English) West of Haasts Bluff, A legend tells that at the time of the creation of the world, a group of women camped in this rocky space.
They started to pick diverse berries (the desert raisin or kampurarrpa and the quandong - or blue fig - or mangata) and to make straw skirts. To evoke this place, this artist had recourse to a palette of sand and salmon tints to imitate the colour of the area; she also placed upon this canvas the diverse elements linked to its history: the border running all around the work and by sacralising the space evokes the dunes encircling Kungkiiyunti; the spiky forms dispersed around represent the bushes and the circles the berries growing there (like perhaps the diverse ceremonial sites to which Kungkiiyunti is attached by mystical links).
This canvas is accompanied by the certificates of authenticité of the art centre of Papunya Tula and an expert in aboriginal art.
