Manuscript leaf with large miniature - David's Psalm - C.1450 / Description: Illuminated manuscript - First Psalm of the Latin Vulgate Bible. 'In illuminated manuscript psalters the start of the main psalms text (Psalm 1 - Beatus Vir) was traditionally marked by a large Beatus initial for the "B" of "Beatus". Here we have a large vellum leaf with abundant border decoration who measures 33,00 bu 22,5 cm, with a large miniature illuminated initial B (9 by 9 cm). Inside the B we see The Virgin and Child standing under a canopy while the child places his hand on the heart held out to him by an ecclesiastical figure, probably an abbot or bishop, maybe the donor on who's behalf the work was made. The B is flanked at the four corners by music making angels. The text of the Psalm is about the happiness of the just and the evil state of the wicked. The happiness of the just man as contrasted with the misery of the wicked. In obeying the law of God he shall prosper, while the way of the wicked will end in punishment and ruin. For full text and translation see the chapter Literature below. The dating and origin of this outstanding rare pieces has to be made carefully. Based on the border decoration with at least a dozen of birds hidden between the flowers and the accanthus leaves, the use of gold drops all over the border, the delicate decoration of the two miniatures (the bottom one showing Veronica holding the shroud) the dating can be set around 1450, however my feeling is this might be older .The broader range could be from 1400 onwards towards 1480 but not later than this end date. The origin is probably to be found in the Netherlands or southern Germany. / Dimensions: 23,00 x 33,00 cm / Condition: Some moderate age toning, small degeneration of the painted border decoration at bottom right corner. Otherwise in very good condition considering the age. (Blessed is the man who has not followed the counsel of the impious, and has not remained in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the chair of pestilence.(But his will is with the law of the Lord, and he will meditate on his law, day and night. And he will be like a tree that has been planted beside running waters, which will provide its fruit in its time, and its leaf will not fall away, and all things whatsoever that he does will prosper. Not so the impious, not so. For they are like the dust that the wind casts along the face of the earth. Therefore, the impious will not prevail again in judgment, nor sinners in the council of the just. For the Lord knows the way of the just. And the path of the impious will pass away) ------------- The University of Groningen holds a Psalter with some similarity in decoration and used Initial letters from the Saint Catherines abby of Selwerd near Groningen written between 1444-1480 / Medium: Manuscript /Circa: C.1450
