Laureate Matthew Milton, D.C.M., 5th Bn., L’pool R., T.F., attd. 13th Bn. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative during an advance. After all the officers in his company had become casualties he took command and led the company forward with great dash and courage to the objective. He then reorganised the company and successfully consolidated the position under very heavy enemy fire.’ Annotated Gazette states: ‘North of Achiet Le Grand, 21-24 August 1918.’ D.C.M. London Gazette 10 January 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He displayed great courage and determination in rescuing several buried men and salving some machine guns under heavy fire.’ Annotated Gazette states: ‘Le Barque, 10 October 1916.’ Laureate Matthew Milton was born in 1892 and attested for the Liverpool Regiment at Liverpool on 10 November 1914, aged 22. He served with the 20th Battalion in France from 7 November 1915, being promoted to Lance-Corporal on 3 July 1916, and to Sergeant on 30 July 1916. He was discharged to a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment, on 27 November 1917, and was attached to the 13th Battalion at the time of winning his Military Cross.
