A Chinese Scroll Painting By Zhang Daqian 93x37cm 20th century. Jin Bosheng (1901-1967) was a prominent figure in the world of antique calligraphy and painting in Beijing. He began his career as the manager of Beijing Lunwen Zhai and later held a position at Bao Gu Zhai. Renowned as a connoisseur and businessman, Jin Bosheng was highly respected for his expertise in appraising and appreciating ancient artworks. He was also recognized as the mentor of Zhang Cisheng, a well-known expert in calligraphy and painting appraisal. Jin Bosheng possessed exceptional skills in both calligraphy and painting, and his discerning eye for art appreciation set him apart. He cultivated close relationships with numerous modern Chinese artists, including Zhang Daqian and Xie Zhiliu. During the 1920s and 1930s, he played a significant role in promoting Zhang Daqian's imitations and reproductions of renowned artists such as Shi Tao, Ba Da Shan Ren, and Tang Yin. Notably, he facilitated the sale of Zhang Daqian's imitation of Shi Tao directly to the esteemed Zhang Xueliang, while also arranging sales of works by Shi Tao and Ba Da Shan Ren to Shimazu Teijiro. Jin Bosheng and Zhang Daqian maintained a frequent exchange of calligraphy and paintings. Zhang Daqian generously gifted several of his works to Jin Bosheng, creating a lasting artistic connection. Unfortunately, due to the tumultuous period of the Cultural Revolution, some of the artworks sent by Zhang Daqian were unable to be retrieved at the time. However, they were later claimed by Jin Bosheng's descendants. In an intriguing turn of events, Jin Bosheng ventured to Changchun when Emperor Puyi was expelled from the palace. He seized the opportunity to purchase a substantial number of antique treasures and calligraphy from the Forbidden City, which had been brought to Changchun by Puyi. Among his acquisitions were the famous works "Daofu Zan" by Fan Zhongyan and "Zhang Haohao Shi" by Du Mu, which Jin Bosheng subsequently sold to Zhang Boju. Additionally, he generously donated the renowned masterpiece "Qianli Jiangshan Tu" to the Beijing Palace Museum. Other precious calligraphy and painting pieces from his collection have been preserved by his descendants until the present day. Tragically, in 1966, at the age of sixty-six, Jin Bosheng fell victim to the persecution of the "Cultural Revolution." He passed away in Xianghe, Hebei Province, leaving behind a legacy of art appreciation and a profound impact on the world of antique calligraphy and painting. In this auction, some of the items from Jin Bosheng's collection originate from his descendants, while others have been collected and compiled by our company in recent years. The calligraphy and painting pieces bear inscriptions attributed to Jin Bosheng and are accompanied by his seal, which reads "Jin Bosheng's Cherished Collection of Calligraphy and Painting." This seal was intricately carved by Shou ShiGong specifically for Jin Bosheng.
