Luca Giordano (Napoli 1634 - 1705)
Morte di Catone
Olio su tela
154 x 232
Luca Giordano (Naples 1634 - 1705)
Death of Cato
Oil on canvas
154 x 232
The artwork, recently discovered in a private collection, is fascinating because of the many repentances that can be observed, such as suggesting that it is an autograph. In this regard, observe the variations in the posture of Cato's arms, the widening of the arch at the top and the lengthening of the iron where the parrot rests, and the ongoing adaptations of almost all the faces. Finally, the fast and incisive pictorial execution should be noted, a peculiarity that earned Giordano the nickname "Luca fa presto".
Other versions of this subject are known: an oil on canvas (179.7 x 260.5), circa 1699, which appeared on the New York antiques market at Pietro Corsini, believed to be autograph and published as such by Oreste Ferrari and Giuseppe Scavizzi, in Luca Giordano-The complete work, photo 845 page 822 and file A648 pages. 350 and 351; an autograph version given in the aforementioned monographic text but considered to be a workshop by the French museum system is preserved in the Musée Denon of Chalon-sur-Saone; finally, another version considered of lower quality and/or workshop is preserved in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome.
