José Villegas Cora (Puebla de los Ángeles, New Spain 1709-1786) and Antonio Primo Feliciano Villegas Cora, polychromator."Saint Joseph"Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture with estofado technique. Circa 1753.With rod, crown and silver symbols of power. 81 x 35,5 x 25 cm.The attribution to Maestro Villegas Cora is very well founded. We can, for example, compare this marvellous sculpture to the “Saint Pantaleon”, dated in 1753, which can be found in Puebla Cathedral, and which was included in the exhibition “Ecos. Testigos y testimonios de la Catedral de Puebla” which took place in the Amparo Museum in the same city in December 2013 and April 2014.In both sculptures the treatment of the faces is similar, even morphologically their features are like each other, only our Saint Joseph is at an older age, and bearded, but with the same slim, sharp nose, almond shaped eyes and fine lips.  Moreover, there is an identical treatment and posture of the hands, with the presence of noticeable veins and characteristic and elegant movement of the fingers. With regard to the decoration, the hand of the artist Antonio Primo Feliciano Villegas Cora can be seen in the rich polychroming of brightly-coloured flowers on a gold ground background. An image of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child attributed to the Coras has recently been discovered as part of the artistic legacy of Santiago Durante of the parish of Toirano, in Savona, Italy. This and another depiction of Saint Joseph and the Child that can be found in Molcaxac, Puebla, have great similarities to ours, given that the subject of the sculpture is Saint Joseph in all three cases. The Coras are considered to be the only Viceroyalty sculptors of Puebla who have been remembered, due to the fact that the extremely high quality of their work has endured and been remembered.  In the 19th century they were described as “restorers of good art,” according to the Guide to the religious patrimony of the city of Puebla. Their fame crossed borders as they were also famous in Europe. The Cora family workshop was extended throughout the 18th century and was located in the neighbourhood of Analco. The most outstanding members were the Great Master and the founder of the workshop, José Villegas Cora.Their work is mostly kept in Puebla. In the Church of Saint Christopher are the figures of Saint Anne and Saint Joaquim, and there is also an Immaculate Conception at the church of Saint Joseph. The principal image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, situated on the Main Altar of the Templo Conventual de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, is also attributed to them.
