German: Josef Wagner-Höhenberg (1870 Höhenberg - 1937 München), signiert Rechts unten sign. Wagner Höhenberg, Öl auf Leinwand, 57 x 73 cm, gerahmt. Literatur: Alexander Rauch, Artikel Wagner-Höhenberg, in: Bruckmanns Lexikon der Münchener Malerei des 19./20. Jhdts., Band 6 mit Abbildungen.
Josef Wagner-Höhenberg was a genre, portrait and historical painter born in Höhenberg, Germany in 1870. Father of the genre painter Fritz Wagner (1896-1967). Studied at the Florence Academy of Art as well as in Munich and later became a member of the Munich school of painting. Wagner-Höhenberg specialized in painting finely detailed interior scenes. Due to his ability to capture emotion and give portrait-like features to his subjects he is considered one of the most gifted 19th-century German artists of his era. Examples of his work can be found in many private and public art collections including the Witt Library.
