AN INTERESTING AND FINELY PAINTED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE OGNEVIDNAYA MOTHER OF GOD WITH SAINTS, PALEKH, SIGNED & DATED 1826. At top center within an arched reserve is an icon of the Ognevidnaya Mother of God held aloft by angels. The inscriptions surrounding her read, “An image of the Ognevidnaya Most Holy Mother of God” and further still “Her commemoration is on February 10th.” The saint depicted below at left is "The Holy Priest-Martyr Vavila (Babylas), Archbishop” and the inscription over the young ones near him says "... And those with him, the three youths."  (Their names, though not given, are Urvan, Prilidian, and Eppoloniy).  They were martyred along with Babylas.  They are commemorated on September 4th. In the center is Moses whose inscription above his head identifies him as "The Holy Prophet, God-seer Moses."  He too is commemorated on September 4th.  To the right of Moses is Saint Nicholas and between them, according to the inscription above their heads, are the 84 children martyred with Babylas of Nicomedia.  They and Babylas of Nicomedia are celebrated on the same day as Babylas of Antioch, September 4th. The inner kovcheg is decorated in gilt scroll work and the lower right margin is inscribed, “Painted in the year 7335” – which is 1826, and on the extreme lower right corner inscribed in Cyrillic, "Workshop of ANDREI IVANOV." The offered icon demonstrates how icons were often specially commissioned so as to coincide with specific feast days which in this case would only be known to the customer who ordered it and no one else. Obviously it was intended for someone to which the date of September 4th was meaningful.  In an excellent state of preservation and exhibiting classic Palekh stylized clouds.15.75 inches x 13.5 inches (40 x 34.5 cm).
