A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. NICHOLAS WITH LIFE SCENES, PROBABLY MSTERA, CIRCA 1820. At center St. Nicholas depicted in half length and surrounded by the addition of five family saints and the Guardian Angel. Further out still, are twelve scenes illustrating his life, beginning in the upper left corner with his birth and concluding in the lower right corner with the transfer of his relics. The inner border (kovcheg) decorated with gilt scroll work- typical of Mstera icons and the overall quality of painting exceedingly high. A very fine specimen in excellent condition. 21.25 inches x 17.5 inches (54 x 44.5 cm).
