AN EXCEPTIONAL ICON OF SAINT IOSIF ZAONIKIEVSKIY, MOSCOW WORKSHOP, CIRCA 1900.  This icon illustrates the life of Saint Iosif (Joseph) who lived from circa 1530-1612. He was a peasant from Vologda who suffered from an eye disease and so he prayed for help in church, and St. Cosmas appeared to him, and led him to a swampy place in the forest as illustrated in the offered icon. Then Cosmas told Iosif to come there again the following day, and disappeared.  On the next day Iosif returned to the place, and saints Cosmas and Damian appeared to him as shown here and then an icon of Mary, depicted in this icon as being held aloft by angels appeared in light, and by venerating it, Iosif was healed.  The appearance of the icon took place on June 23, 1588. He built a chapel there to house the icon (later called the Zaonikievskaya Mother of God), and made his dwelling close by.  Eventually a monastery was built on the site, called the Zaonikievskaya Monastery, where Iosif was interred. The exceptionally high quality of painting is certainly reminiscent of many of the Mstera and Palekh trained iconographers who set up shops in Moscow at the end of the 19th century developing aristocratic clientele including the Imperial family. The extensive use of gilt highlights and fanciful shaded vegetation and landscape is evocative of icons produced by Mikhail Dikarev as well as A. I.  Tsepkov, the workshop of noted iconographer Mikhail Ivanovich Parilov is also a viable candidate for such an exquisite icon. 12.25 inches x 10.25 inches (31 x 26 cm).
