A VERY FINE & RARE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN WITH LIFE SCENES, MOSCOW WORKSHOP, 19TH CENTURY. At center is a seated half-length image identified by the inscription above him as The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John. He is depicted with his hands held meditatively to his lips as he contemplates writing his Gospel which he holds open on his lap and which begins, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God…..” An Angel of the Lord whispers divine inspiration into his ear and his symbol, a lion, is seated to his left. This central or main image is further surrounded by twelve scenes from his life each identified by a corresponding inscription. They are clockwise from upper left: 1. John so loved by the Lord that he reclines on his bosom at the "Last Supper." 2.  Shipwrecked on the way to Ephesus, after 14 days a wave casts John out of the sea unharmed as his disciple Prokhor looks on. 3.  John casts out a demon inhabiting the public baths in Ephesus and brings a boy back to life. 4.  Stones are cast at John during a festival at the Temple of Artemis, but instead of harming him they strike and damage the image of the goddess and fall back on the people. 5.  Domitian, Emperor of Rome, commands his servants to give John a poisoned chalice to drink, but John does not die from it. 6. The contest of John with the sorcerer Kynops, who plunges into the sea and is turned into a rock. 7. The aged John commands his disciples to bury him in the earth. 8. John goes on horse to bring back a disciple who had become a brigand. 9. John appears to Caesar in a dream and shows him the blindness of idolatry. 10. John rescues children from service to idols. 11. John is placed in a cauldron of boiling oil, but is not harmed. 12.  In the name of Jesus, John casts out a demon living in the Temple of Artemis. The upper margin inscribed with the title of this icon, "Image of the Life and Sufferings of the Wonderworker of the Lord and Evangelist John the Theologian" 14.2 inches x 11.75 inches (36 x 30 cm).
