A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CONSCECRATED RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BALYKINO MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1914. Here the Mother of God, crowned as queen of heaven, prays with hands held together while the infant Christ, who holds an apple rests in her lap. The gilded background and borders deeply and ornately incised and the borders painted in faux enamel. The verso with lengthy period inscription, "This holy icon of the Umilenie ['Merciful'] Mother of God was consecrated on 26th May, 1914, in the Annunciation Church in the city of Rostov, Yaroslavl Gubernia [Province], and held to the wonder-working image of the Mother of God. Annunciation Church in the city of Rostov, Priest Konstantin Liubimov". 27.6 inches x 22.75 inches (70 x 58 cm).

The prototype of this icon first appeared in the village of Balykin, in the province of Chernigov on June 30, 1711. It was painted on canvas in the Italianate style. However, a copy of this same image gained great notoriety in Rostov after the lengthy miraculous healing of the young girl named Lisa Lepeshkin who first encountered the icon in 1910 after having suffered headaches and seizures. It was, incidentally, the priest Father Konstantin Lubimov, who often assisted the young Lisa on her journey of healing. Locally the icon was often called The Virgin with Apple. After hearing of the numerous miracles attributed to the intercession of Our Lady in front of the icon, the future Patriarch of Moscow, then archbishop Tikhon of Yaroslavl and Rostov, visited the church and icon in the year 1911 after which time the icon became known as the "Affection of Rostov." In 1913, Tsar Nicholas and his family also visited the icon and met the young girl Lisa Lepeshkin. In 1930, the Church of the Annunciation was blown up but the icon and kiot survived, and it is still processed and venerated today.
