A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD TO SAINT SERGIY, TRINITY SERGIEV LAVRA WORKSHOP, 1884. An exceedingly well painted icon, here depicted the appearance of the Mother of God, together with Saints Peter and Paul to the Venerable Sergiy and his disciple Micah. The borders intricately incised, the haloes painted with faux jewels and the vestments highlighted with gold. The lower central margin with faint partial inscription very likely that of the Trinity Sergiev Lavra icon painting workshop director, Ivan Malyshev. The verso with original old affixed paper label with hand written Russian dedicatory inscription, “1884, June 21st, Thursday; This icon of Venerable Sergei belongs to Alexander -- Blessings from Mother.” The upper edge of panel inscribed with original price 16 rubles- quite a sum at that time. 10.75 inches x 8.75 inches (27.5 x 22.4 cm).
