A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ABALATSKAYA ZNAMENIE MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1890. The prototype of this Sign Mother of God icon variant was painted in 1637 by the protodeacon Matfei in the diocese of Tabolsk. It originated in the experience of a widow named Maria who saw such an image and heard the Virgin speak to her. The veil of the Virgin is painted with faux seed pearls, the gilt background is ornately incised and the borders are painted to simulate cloisonné enameling. The garments decorated with fine gilt highlighting. The right border painted with Saint Mary of Egypt and the left border incorrectly painted with St. Basil the Great in lieu of St. Nicholas, such as in the prototype.  12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
