Hydria des Baltimore Malers, letztes Drittel 4. Jhdt. v. Chr. Rotfiguriges Tongefäß für Wasser (Hydria) mit elegantem, auswärts geschwungenem Fuß. Darüber leicht ausladender Korpus mit deutlichem Schulterknick, der zum schmalen, leicht konkaven Hals überleitet. Breiter, horizontal verlaufender, außen profilierter Rand mit leicht nach unten hängender Lippe. Seitlich zwei horizontale Henkel unterhalb des Umbruchs. Auf der Rückseite vertikaler Henkel vom Umbruch aufwärts bis knapp unterhalb des Randes geführt. Die über den Umbruch verlaufende Bildfläche unten durch Mäander begrenzt, oben am unteren Hals durch Zweig. Auf der Schauseite fein ausgeführte Szene aus der Hand des Baltimore-Malers. Sitzender, geflügelter Eros, der einen Korb mit Früchten hält. Gegenüber eine junge Frau, die Linke einen Kranz haltend auf Säule abgestützt, das linke Bein über das rechte geschlagen, in der angewinkelten Rechten ein Korb. In den freien Feldern Blüten, Blätter und Girlande. Auf der Rückseite Palmetten. Minimale, antike Abplatzung am Fußrand, zugesinterte Sprünge im unteren Bereich des Korpus. Vereinzelt leichte Sinterauflagen. Sonst intakt. Höhe 36 cm. Reizvolles Exemplar apulischer Vasenmalerei von hoher Qualität. Aus in Deutschland verwahrter Privatsammlung, erworben im ersten Jahrzehnt dieses Jahrhunderts im englischen Kunsthandel. Red-figure clay vessel for water (hydria) with elegant foot curved outwards, surmounted by a slightly extended corpus with distinct bend in the shoulder area merging into the narrow, slightly concave neck. Broad, horizontal rim with profiled edge and lightly drooping lip. On the sides two horizontal handles below the curve. On the reverse a vertical handle reaching upwards from the curve to just below the edge. The image extending over the curve is framed by a meander pattern at the bottom and a twig at the lower neck. On the obverse a finely executed scene by the hand of the Baltimore Painter. Seated, winged Eros, holding a basket with fruits. Facing him is a young woman, her left arm resting on a pillar, her hand holding a wreath, her left leg crossed over her right, carrying a basket in her bent right hand. The free areas with blossoms, leaves and garland. On the reverse palmettes. Minimal, antique chipping at the edge of the foot, sintered cracks in the lower part of the corpus. Lightly coated with sinter in some places. Otherwise intact. Height 36 cm. Charming, high-quality specimen of Apulian vase painting.
