In 1914, several months before the outbreak of WWI, he joined the 1st Badische Leib-Grenadier-Regiment No. 109 and served in the field following the start of hostilities. By February 1915, he was training as an Aerial Observer and during the remainder of the war became a pilot - with a confirmed "kill", squadron leader, instructor, Air Park Commander and served on the General Staff for Air Operations. Von Manteuffel stayed in the service until 1920 when he retired. He was called back into service in 1936 and during the Third-Reich held various command positions, including Generalmajor and commander of the Luftwaffe forces in Romania in 1944. On 28 August 1944, von Manteuffel became a Soviet war prisoner from which he was released on 3 January 1950. He died in Wiesbaden on 3 July 1984.
