An East Javanese Keris, with 18th century blade.
An East Javanese Keris, with 18th century blade.
Umur (age): Kartasura, the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram.
The Keris with a straight hand forged Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (pattern type: ‘Kulit Semangka’ and ‘Nunggak Semi’). Dapur in ‘Kebo Jaler’ shape. Small copper gilded Mendak (cuff) of ‘Meniran’ type, between hilt and blade. Keris hilt (Urikan) in fine ‘Raksasa’ shape, and carved from Tayuman wood. Warangka (sheath) of ‘Gayaman Gabel’ type (‘kidney’ shaped) and made from Cendana Jawa Pendok wood patiently carved by hand. Gandar (body) (body) with brass Pendok (cover), Bunton in Tombak with ‘Alas Alasan’ pattern.
Length of the blade, including ‘Pesi’ (tang of the blade): 41 cm. (1x)
Note 1: Between 1680 and 1755, Kartasura was the capital of the Sultanate of Mataram. This Sultanate was the last major independent Javanese kingdom on Java before the island was colonized by the Dutch. It is commonly referred to as the Kartasura era or period of the Mataram sultanate. It preceded the transfer to Surakarta by Pakubuwana II.
