A West Javanese Keris, with 17th century Keris blade.
Umur (age): From the period of Sultanate of Banten.
The Keris with a straight hand forged Wilah (blade), consists of Pamor steel forged in different layers of iron (pattern type: ‘Kulit Semangka’). Dapur in ‘Sempana Bener’ and ‘Elephant trunk shape’. Small copper Mendak (cuff) of ‘Meniran’ type, between hilt and blade. Ukiran (Keris hilt) in ‘Yogya Banaran’ shape, and carved from Tayuman wood. Old Warangka (sheath) of ‘Gayaman’ type (‘kidney’ shaped) and made from Kemuning Iras wood patiently carved by hand. Gandar (body) (body) with brass Pendok (cover), Blewah in Tombak and decorated with ‘Lung Kanthet’ pattern.
Length of the blade, including ‘Pesi’ (tang of the blade): 42 cm. (1x)
Note 1: Banten was an independent Islamic Sultanate. The Banten Sultanate was founded in the 16th century and centred in Banten, a port city on the northwest coast of Java; the contemporary English spelling of both was Bantam. It is said to have been founded by Sunan Gunungjati, who had previously founded Cirebon. Once a great trading centre in Southeast Asia, especially of pepper, its importance was overshadowed by Batavia, and finally annexed to Dutch East Indies in 1813. Its core territory now forms the Indonesian province of Banten.
