N. BURGAN”, Territorial Force War medal, “LIEUT. N. BURGAN E.SURR. R”., India General Service medal with clasp Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919, “CAPT. N. BURGAN 2/11/GURKHAS”, 1939-45 Star, Defence medal, War medal 1939-45 and Jubilee medal 1935, last 4 unnamed as issued. 1st, 2nd,3rd and 5th medals mounted as worn on pin bar and in fitted Goldsmith & Co. case with the outside of the lid named N. BURGAN FIRST GURKHAS, the other medals loose. Lot also includes named cardboard box of issue for Second World War medals, LT. COL N. BURGAN M.C., to an address in Heswall, Cheshire, with an Indian Army issue slip. Mounted group of matching miniature medals (excluding the Second World War medals), 4 Gurkha Rifles buttons and two 1st Gurkha’s collar badges. Military Cross, London Gazette, 11th January 1919 – Lt. Norman Burgan, 1st attd. 2/4th Gurkha Rifles. (MESOPOTAMIA) - For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer displayed great coolness in action and made several excellent reconnaissance’s of the fords over the river under fire, bringing back information which was of the greatest value. Bar to the Military Cross, London Gazette, 29th November 1919 – Capt. Norman Burgan, M.C. 2/11th Gurkha Rifles I.A. (INDIA) - He commanded the leading company of his battalion in the attack on Khargali Ridge on 11th May, 1919, with great courage and determined leadership. By his dash and rapidity of movement in seizing the centre of the position he enabled other portions of the battalion to reach the hostile gun emplacements, resulting in the capture of four guns with ammunition and horses. (M.C. gazetted 11th January, 1919). Mentioned in despatches, London Gazette 14th January 1943 – The KING has been graciously pleased to approve that the following be Mentioned in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Iraq, Syria and Persia during the period April, 1941 to February, 1942. 1 G.R. – Maj (actg. Lt-Col) N. Burgan, M.C. Norman Burgan was born on 23rd September 1893 in Maldon Essex. The oldest son of Master Baker William Burgan the family soon moved north settling in Everton, Lancashire. Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into the 6th East Surrey Regiment having previously served as Lieutenant in the Ealing Cadet Company (London Gazette 5th August 1913). Promoted to Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment (L.G. 27th October 1914) he transferred to the Indian Army in May 1916 as a Temporary Lieutenant. Promoted Captain commanding A Company 4th Gurkha Rifles, L.G. 18th May 1918, and Acting Major in 2/11th Gurkha Rifles L.G. 19th December 1919. Major Burgan retired 2nd May 1944 with the hon. rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (LG 16th June 1944). Norman Burgan died 21st November 1962 and is buried in Rake Lane Cemetery, Wallasey, Merseyside.
