An Interesting Medal Group of Six and Presentation Gurkha Kukri to a Member of Mission 204, the British Military Mission to China in the Early Years of the Second World War, group consists of 1939-45 star, Pacific star with clasp Burma, War medal 1939-45, Defence medal, General Service medal 1918 GVI with clasp Malaya, “S/54919 S/SJT D.G. MATTHEWS R.A.S.C.”, Coronation medal 1937. Mounted on pin back ribbon bar as worn, with matching ribbon bar. Accompanied by a presentation Gurkha Kukri knife, the blade engraved ‘Presented to No S/54919 Sgt D.G. MATTHEWS, R.A.S.C. By Major General J.G. BRUCE, D.S.O., M.C., I.A. And the staff of the British Military Mission to China. British Embassy, Chung King, W. China 30 – 10 – 42’. Lot also includes a pair of fire dog tags, a metal dog tag and an assortment of RASC buttons and badges.
Mission 204 was initially led by Brigadier Lancelot E. Dennys until his death in an air crash on 14th March 1942 after which command transferred to Major General John Geoffrey Bruce. The purpose of the mission was to foster Anglo-Chinese cooperation against the Japanese by training Chinese ‘Surprise Troops’ (the Chinese Nationalists did not like the use of the word guerrilla due to its association with the Communist forces). In February 1942 three Commando Contingents, each of 50 men, travelled over 3000km through Burma into China to join Lieutenant-Colonel Chen Ling Sun’s Chinese 5th Battalion. Due to communication issues between the British and Chinese Forces the Mission did not fare well and in September 1942 the troops were withdrawn as they had little confidence in the Chinese Commander under whom they were serving, and it was perceived that they were not being used to any benefit by the Chinese military.
